Finance Minister loses winning streak as tax collection comes lower compared to last year in Q2

At the same time that the Finance Minister was hailing increasing tax collection efforts by the government, the National statistics Office published statistics showing  that the government has collected less revenues in the second quarter of this year compared to last year. This is the first time after a series of quarters in which tax revenues are less than last year’s, breaking the Minister’s of Finance winning streak.

In the second quarter of 2025, total revenue amounted to €1.95 billion, a decrease of €38.7 million compared to last year with the decrease mainly coming from income from taxes and wealth and properties. Total expenditure increased by up to  €2.12 billion, an increase of €170.4 million compared to the same quarter of 2024. Government expenditure was caused by government salaries, recurrent expenditure, and social benefits.

The debt to GDP ratio is currently at 46.9% and the deficit to GDP ratio was at 1.7%, lower than the EU averages at 81.9%  and at 3.1% respectively.
