Earlier this week in Parliament, Opposition MP Mark Anthony Sammut delivered a scathing speech against the government’s motion to censure the Opposition, saying that the only governments to have presented a similar motion in parliament are Pakistan, India, and Rwanda. The Opposition MP said that the motion is a sign that the government doesn’t tolerate criticism.
Earlier this week, the Labour government passed a motion of censorship against the Opposition over a debate at the European Parliament about Daphne Caruana Galizia and delayed justice. You can download the motion here. Government MPs voted in favour of the motion and it was approved in parliament.
Mark Anthony Sammut said that the motion is bizarre and makes a mockery of democracy. He noted that the debate at the European Parliament is held every year to commemorate Daphne Caruana Galizia, and also highlighted that the Labour Party hasn’t yet commemorated Daphne Caruana Galizia. He urged the government to implement the required reforms to improve the justice system and restore rule-of-law if the Labour Party really has the country’s interest at heart.
Mark Anthony Sammut also condemned the OPM’s employee, Neville Gafa, who has been vandalising the makeshift monument of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Mark Anthony Sammut reminded the government that a Constitutional Court condemned the Minister of Culture Owen Bonnici for removing the makeshift monument and described such actions as childish and intolerant to free speech. Mark Anthony Sammut said that this is the kind of behaviour that tarnishes Malta’s image.
He concluded that the government is not Malta and that European Parliament never criticised Malta. “Damage to Malta was done by the Labour government that brought us into the (FATF) Grey List” he said.
