Latest statistics by Eurostat have confirmed that poverty in Malta has increased from 16.6% to 17% confirming similar statistics released earlier this year by the NSO noting that poverty has increased.
Overall, subjective poverty in Europe has decreased from 19.1% in 2023 to 17.4%. Greece had the highest rate of people considered as subjectively poor atย 66.8%, followed by Bulgaria at 37.4% and Slovakia at 28.7%. Poverty was reduced across all age groups in Europe with the highest rate of poor people being children under the age of 18. 17.3% of the people aged between 18 to 64 years old are considered poor while the rate for people aged 65 years old and older is at 14.9%.
Greece never recovered from its financial crisis of 2008 and today is afflicted by high inflation and heavy taxes that burden mostly ordinary citizens and small businesses. Greece also has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe.
