The number of people living in Maltese households at risk of poverty increased by 0.2% in 2024 from 2023 according to the latest NSO figures as part of the EU-SILC project that provides social indicators. The number of people at risk of poverty and also at risk of social exclusion increased by 0.1% to 19.7 from 2023 to 2024.
Children and the elderly face the biggest risk of being in poverty or socially excluded, especially older people who are not married. The highest rate of people at risk of poverty is found in the northern part of Malta. Up to 92,000 people in Malta are at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
In 2023, the average household income in Malta was estimated at around โฌ38,236. The average salary is around โฌ30,000.
Other figures released last month as part of the same project cite that 79.5% of people living in private households said that are experiencing good health while up to 29.6% suffer from a chronic illness or condition. 60.2% have said that they are happy most of the time with 34% saying they rarely experience agitation or nervousness.
Malta has one of the lowest minimum wages in the European Union.
