Malta right below EU average with rate of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion

Malta’s rate of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion at 19.7% of households, comes just right below the EU’s average of 21% according to EuroStat. The highest rates were recorded in Bulgaria (30.3%), Romania (27.9%) and (26.9%). The lowest rates are found in Czechia (11.3%), Slovenia (14.4%) and Netherlands (15.4%).

In 2024 up to 94.3 million people in the EU were recorded to be living at risk of poverty and social exclusion: 21% of the EU’s population. The number decreased slightly from 2023 by 0.3% from 94.6 million people.

More women are at risk of poverty than man with 21.9% of women compared to 20% of men being at risk of poverty. 10.9% of employed people are at risk of poverty while the figure for the unemployed is up to 66.6%.
