Up to 37 people were arrested yesterday in Belgrade, Serbia as protestors marked the one year anniversary of the Novi Sad tragedy during protests that stretched throughout the weekend. On November 1st 2024, up to 16 people were killed in Novi Sad when a newly built roof of a train station collapsed prompting mass protests against government corruption. Mass protests continued this year reaching a climax in March.
The Serbian riot police and the protestors clashed when Dijana Hrka, a mother of one of the victims of the Novi Sad tragedy arrived at the parliament building with the intention of staging a hunger strike. Despite the clashes, she has successfully staged the hunger strike outside the parliament building and is there at the moment (photo below).
Despite massive opposition to the government, the Serbian opposition has failed to form a united front and students and young people remain at the forefront of the protest movement.
Thugs from the Serbian Progressive Party in typical football-hooligan formation also clashed with protestors yesterday as the government tried to disrupt the protests. Right now, protestors are slowly gathering back in front of Parliament.
