Following President Donald Trump’s successful meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping in which China suspended its trading restrictions against the US, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted the importance of de-risking from China. Secretary Bessent said that he is not proposing to de-couple from China, but to de-risk, and also said that the US and its allies should be building their own supply chains.
The US lowered tariffs for Chinese imports from 57% to 47% after China resumed US soy-bean purchases and rare earths exports. President Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to meet in April.
In a separate interview with Nora O’Donnell in 60 Minutes of CBS News, President Trump hailed his meeting with Xi Jinping but refused to give an answer to the question on how the US would react if China invaded Taiwan.
“You’ll find out if it happens and he understands the answer to that,” President Trump said. The President added that he can’t give away his secrets.
