Turkish giants Samsunspor extended their flawless start in the UEFA Conference League with a commanding 3–0 victory over Ħamrun Spartans at the Samsun Yeni 19 Mayıs Stadium on Thursday evening.
It was a dominant display by the home side, who showcased their superior technical quality and attacking sharpness against a spirited Ħamrun team that fought bravely but ultimately struggled to contain the Turks’ relentless pressure.
From the outset, Samsunspor dictated the tempo through the creativity of Carlo Holse and the pace of Anthony Musaba, forcing the Maltese champions to defend deep for long stretches. Despite Ħamrun’s effort and organization, they found it difficult to cope with the hosts’ quick transitions and incisive play.
While the result was disappointing, Ħamrun Spartans can take valuable lessons from this European experience as they turn their attention to their next home fixture — a crucial tie against Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar, where they will aim to claim their first points in the group stage.
First Half
Coach Giacomo Modica made a few changes to his starting lineup, introducing Matias Garcia and Semir Smajlagic, with Eder and Saliou Thioune starting on the bench.
Ħamrun produced the game’s first chance on 12 minutes when Ognjen Bjelicic intercepted a pass and set up Koffi, whose angled strike was pushed away by goalkeeper Okan Kocuk.
Moments later, Henry Bonello denied Mouandilmadji with a superb save from close range, but Samsunspor’s pressure finally paid off on 21 minutes. Emre Kilinc sent a precise through-ball to Carlo Holse, who calmly slotted past Bonello. The assistant referee initially flagged for offside, but after a VAR review, the goal was confirmed as valid.
The hosts nearly doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when Kilinc lobbed Bonello, only for Camenzuli to clear off the line with the help of the upright. Holse then found the net again moments later, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Polito.
Ħamrun’s best moment came six minutes before half-time, when Koffi found Emmanuel Mbong in the box, but the Malta winger’s flick was well saved by Kocuk.
Second Half
Modica introduced Eder and Thioune after the break to add more mobility and attacking intent. However, Samsunspor’s dominance continued, and on 58 minutes, Kilinc made it 2–0 with a powerful low strike from the edge of the area following a corner.
The Turkish side remained in full control and nearly added a third when Rick Van Drongelen headed wide from Yavru’s cross.
The third goal arrived on 76 minutes when a long pass from Kocuk caught the Spartans’ defence off guard. Holse raced clear and squared for Mouandilmadji, who finished confidently to seal the victory.
Final Thoughts
While Samsunspor’s quality ultimately proved too much, Ħamrun Spartans can take encouragement from moments of resilience and discipline against one of the competition’s in-form sides. Their next task will be to regroup and prepare for a must-win encounter at home in their upcoming group match.
