The Rapid Support Forces are demanding a conditional ceasefire with the Sudanese Armed Forces after committing ethnic cleansing in the city of Al-Fashir. The ceasefire by the SAF has not been accepted. US mediator Massad Boulos said that both parties have accepted the ceasefire in principle but “details” need to be ironed out.
Mediations are being held through what is called the Sudan Quad that includes ย Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. The UAE backs, arms and finances the RSF.
The RSF is conducting a drone campaign against Sudanese cities as it requests its ceasefire. The RSf previously also consistently refused a ceasefire when still besieging Al-Fashir and are demanding a ceasefire only now after capturing the city. The RSF have struck the cities of Omdurman, Atbara and the capital city of Khartoum with drones. The RSF have previously used Chinese drones supplied by the UAE to strike civilian infrastructure and residential buildings in Khartoum.
The RSF’s common tactics include using civilians and acts of ethnic cleansing to gain military and diplomatic leverage. The RSF often commit massacres following military defeats and uses civilians as hostages to extract concessions.
The Sudanese residents that have remained in Al-Fashir remain unaccounted for the RSF committed massacres in the city killed thousands of people. Hundreds died of thirst and exhaustion as they fled the city.
Meanwhile, House Democrats of the Foreign Affairs Committee are calling on the RSF to release Muammar Ibrahim, a Sudanese journalist who has been abducted from Al-Fashir by the RSF.
