The only faction in the Labour Party that can openly challenge Joseph Muscat’s influence and power in the Labour Party is Chris Fearne’s faction. Chris Fearne’s influence in the Party waned after he resigned as Health Minister but it also waned because the Prime Minister chose to empower Joseph Muscat at the expense of his main rivals in the party mainly Chris Fearne’s faction.
This has been a strategic error on the Prime Minister’s behalf even if the Prime Minister intentionally intended to favour Joseph at the expense of Chris Fearne. The Prime Minister has a lacking solid block in the Party which can help him exert his influence in the party against the influence of Joseph Muscat. It was ultimately in the Prime Minister’s interest to keep Chris Fearne by his side to counter Joseph Muscat’s influence, but the Prime Minister was outplayed and his hand is weak as a result.
Getting back Chris Fearne into the inner party’s fold would help counteract Joseph Muscat’s influence in the next general election which will involve an extensive battle between the Labour Party and Joseph Muscat over their preferred candidates for parliament.
