3,798 individuals reported domestic violence in 2024: 5.7% higher than 2023

According to latest NSO statistics, 3,798 individuals reported domestic violence or made use of government services for domestic violence victims in 2024: 5.7% higher than 2023. Up to 535 perpetrators also made use of a new government reporting system with up to 94% of them being males. 76% of the persons reporting domestic violence were women.

In 2024, a total of 6,768 cases were registered by the different entities providing a form of service to persons experiencing domestic violence. The main services used by persons experiencing domestic violence were the Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) within Aฤกenzija Appoฤกฤก (2,987 registered cases) and the Malta Police Force, which received 2,379 reports. The Southern Harbour District consistently reported the highest number of domestic violence. At least one woman among 100 women experiences domestic violence in the Southern Harbour District.

The localities of the Southern Harbour District are Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua), Fgura, Floriana, Luqa, Marsa, Paola, Santa Luฤ‹ija, Senglea (Isla), Tarxien, Valletta, Xgฤงajra, and ลปabbar.

Up to 73.8% reports across the different services providers involved psychological violence, while 42.2% involved physical violence. 13.8% of all reported cases involved either sexual, economic, and/or another form of violence.
