There is nothing new from the Labour Party following survey results showing it losing ground, while the Nationalist Party recoups lost voters, including many young people. Backbenchers and its politicians at its periphery are more vocal on what they think are the party’s issues while Ministers are silent except for the regular theatrical calls of “Inkomplu naħdmu”, and obviously avoid any criticism.
‘What is common between the comments made by Edward Żammit Lewis and Silvio Grixti is a seemingly sense of exhaustion with propaganda and theatre. The Labour Party needs a very robust propaganda machine that works intensely and consistently to fight the truth of its misgivings especially on the housing crisis, the environment and the rule of law. It’s already very difficult for the Labour Party to control its own public narrative as two major factions struggle for power within the party. At this point, unless Labour taps barrels in Maltese waters and triples the GDP, it is not going to regain its super-sized majority. On the contrary, Labour will probably keep losing as it tries to address its core and ignore everybody else, further consolidating itself as party-in-government exclusively, to and for its own members.
It is indeed true that for many people, especially Labour Party voters, corruption doesn’t matter as long as the economy is doing well. On the other hand, it’s a completely different matter when you try to fool these people by tarnishing your country’s name abroad. Adding insult to injury, the Labour Party even used its theatrical event at the Court of the International Chamber of Commerce by literally enriching its members even further. The Labour Party is going to an unprecedented extent in its theatre, pillage and corruption and with its total disregard to the environmental laws and planning, Labour’s theatre is obviously no longer working.
Labour has lost touch with society but this does not just mean, that Labour Party politicians aren’t doing enough door-to-door visits. Neither does this mean that Labour is failing at giving out handouts or solving problems of constituents. Labour is losing touch with society because it doesn’t believe in anything any more, and in this process it forgot how society works. Labour is expecting us to believe that all our problems will be solved with its budgets and life can only get better for everyone in this way. Yet, budgets don’t solve all of society’s problems as societies need a very strategic and multi-pronged approach to govern and run. It’s not just about tax incentives and government cheques.
It’s also not just a problem of issues. Labour won’t win the elections by planting more trees and telling people about it via billboards. Labour is fundamentally torn between two factions as Joseph Muscat grapples for survival. Labour will never have a coherent set of values that allows it to project a principled and defined vision for the country as long as it is gripped by the organised crime of Joseph Muscat. We’ve already been through this discourse in 2019 and it will keep re-emerging until the problem is finally addressed. Until then, Labour will remain the personal legislator of Joseph Portelli.
