A society for themselves

Yesterday, the Labour Party held a ceremony to unveil the government’s new monument for ex-Premier Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici in Castille Square. The ceremony was attended by Heritgae Malta Chairman Mario Cutajar who gave a speech praised the ex-Labour Party Premier. Joseph Muscat also attended the ceremony and was seen in conversation with Prime Minister Robert Abela.

The event was a sad showcase of political dominance over society by the Labour government and a stern reminder that Labour is governing by diktat on every aspect in society, especially the way the society thinks about is past and its exterior look. Society is being forged in the image of Labour, with Labour’s thoughts and culture and Labour has absolute power to dictate the composure of Maltese society. Publicly and explicitly, the Labour Party is telling society that it is building a society for itself and its supporters. The rest of us have to watch while the government strips away any form of civilian power left that can check its authority over us. Those in the top tier of the club and its associates are using the government to enrich themselves. It’s a club where anything is possible and you are not part of it.

We have already entered the state of illiberal democracy. The Labour government strangles the free press, controls the authorities and keeps trying to interfere with the Justice system. Dissent is allowed but is systematically punished via both official and legal means and also unofficial means such as with online mobs that vilify you. The Public Broadcaster has turned into the Labour Party’s official propaganda machine. Political success and access to government contracts and positions are primarily determined by Party loyalty.

None of the idiots who yesterday were at Castille really care about Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici died alone and only a handful of Labour Party stalwarts were accompanying him on his journey to the other end: one of them was Glenn Bedingfield. The rest, never cared about him and Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici spent his last days of his life strolling around in Valletta looking for people to chat with. The pathetic and fake eulogies for him being made today by the Labour Party politicians only remind me of his loneliness.

Nothing is sacred anymore for Labour after it rejected the currency of truth, and anything can be reduced into a disposable commodity. Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, who was a passive participant in Malta’s political history, remained an unwilling servant of the Labour Party even after his death as he was used for an excuse by Labour to mark its absolute power over society. The monument itself is not even the priority of the event: the event itself is the priority. In fact the monument shows that the government didn’t expend any effort to make sure that it actually looks aesthetically pleasing: it looks like something it has been dipped and thrown in the dirt with the figure is holding hands in what seems to be a very nervous posture.

If Labour wanted to exploit Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici’s death, the monument is perfectly fitting for the occasion.

All of this is just very sad, but also incredibly outrageous.

You can watch the ceremony here.
