Malta’s top ultratriathlete Fabio Spiteri has secured another impressive podium finish, placing second in the Taiwan Ultra Triathlon Deca despite a 24-hour race suspension caused by Typhoon Fung-Wong.
The event – Asia’s first Deca-format ultratriathlon – required athletes to swim 38km, cycle 1,800km and run 421.95km. Spiteri completed the challenge in 229 hours, four hours faster than his national record, though the time cannot be officially recognised due to the weather-related interruption.
Spiteri finished behind France’s five-time world champion Goulwent Tristant and won his age category. This marks his second Deca podium of the year, following his record-breaking performance in Colmar, France, last July.
He described the swim and cycling segments as strong, even taking the race lead before the typhoon forced competitors to take shelter. The final running leg proved the toughest, with muscular pain slowing his pace, but he maintained second place to the end.
Spiteri praised the event’s organisation and thanked his support team and sponsors. He will now rest before preparing for next year’s race in Brazil.
He also renewed his appeal for donations to Project 100, supporting Malta’s animal shelters.
