Bjelicic strikes early in second half as Ħamrun Spartans edge Valletta to claim top spot

Ħamrun Spartans climbed to the summit of the YoHealth Malta Premier League after defeating neighbours and long-time rivals Valletta 1–0 at the National Stadium. A brilliantly taken goal by Ognjen Bjelicic, just three minutes into the second half, proved enough to settle a fiercely contested derby.

Despite a sluggish opening, Ħamrun gradually grew into the match and began applying sustained pressure on the Valletta defence. Their breakthrough arrived shortly after the interval when Bjelicic curled home a precise finish following excellent build-up play—an effort that ultimately sealed the Spartans’ sixth league win of the campaign.

From there, Ħamrun had to defend resolutely as Valletta pushed hard for an equaliser. Henry Bonello, making his 100th Premier League appearance for the Spartans, delivered yet another commanding performance, ensuring his side preserved a clean sheet and the valuable three points. The victory puts Ħamrun two points clear of Floriana, who face Marsaxlokk today.

Valletta, meanwhile, will feel frustrated with the result. They created several promising chances in the latter stages but lacked composure in front of goal, slipping to a second consecutive defeat.

Before kick-off, Spartans CEO Marcel Bonnici presented Bonello with a commemorative shirt marking his milestone appearance.

Bright Start from Valletta, Drama with VAR

Valletta coach Thane Micallef welcomed back defender Sava Radic and forward Yuri Messias, both returning after missing the loss to Żabbar St Patrick. Ħamrun also restored several key players but opted to rest Croatian midfielder Ante Coric, while N’dri Koffi started on the bench.

Valletta began with high intensity, pressing aggressively and unsettling Ħamrun’s rhythm. The Citizens were first to threaten: after eight minutes, Messias forced Bonello into a smart save from a long-range free-kick.

On 20 minutes, Valletta appealed for a penalty when Messias went down under a challenge from Vincenzo Polito, but after a review using the Football Video Support system, referee Slobodan Petrovic dismissed the claims.

Ħamrun responded with chances of their own. Saliou Thioune tested Valletta goalkeeper Adilson Maringa, before Joseph Mbong saw a dangerous cross cleared by Brewer as the Spartans began to dictate possession.

The first half ended in controversy. Valletta were awarded a penalty when Messias fell inside the box under pressure from Emerson Marcelina, but another VAR review revealed simulation, leading Petrovic to overturn the decision and book the Brazilian forward.

Second Half: Instant Impact from Ħamrun’s Substitutes

At half-time, coach Luciano Modica introduced Mouad El Fanis, Koffi, and Joseph Mbong, replacing Cadenovic, Thioune, and Hadzi. The changes had an immediate impact.

Just two minutes after the restart, El Fanis surged forward and fed Mbong, who slipped the ball to Bjelicic. The Serbian midfielder curled a superb effort past Maringa, sending the Ħamrun supporters into celebration.

Valletta pushed hard for a response. Bonello was forced into two excellent stops—first from Steve Borg’s header on 65 minutes, then denying Messias moments later after clever buildup by substitute Yannick Yankam.

The Citizens wasted their best opportunity 20 minutes from time when Aldama’s teasing cross evaded the entire Ħamrun defence, but neither Jefferson nor Andrea Zammit managed to convert into an unguarded net.

Jefferson again came close, beating the offside trap but firing over with only Bonello to beat. At the other end, El Fanis was denied by Maringa in a late Ħamrun chance.

Valletta almost snatched an equaliser at the death when substitute Andrei Ciolacu flicked a close-range effort goalwards, only for it to deflect narrowly wide.
