Spanish Premier Pedro Sanchez comes to Malta for the Socialist International

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is in Malta today for the General Conference of the Socialist International. He has met with Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela for informal discussions. The pair are friends allies with both of them being leaders of an EU-member state that are also part of the Party of European Socialists and the S&D Group.

However, Malta’s Prime Minister doesn’t travel much abroad on diplomatic engagements and meetings with counterparts and rarely has these kind of informal discussions. Meetings at the European Council are often busy with back-toback discussions that give little opportunity for Malta’s Prime Minister to meaningful engage with his counterparts.

Spanish Premier Pedro Sanchez has been trying to revive the Socialist International but so far, it has been limited to a talking shop of small African socialist parties and a handful of their European counterparts. Major socialist parties such as the German SDP and the UK Labour Party still haven’t reactivated their membership yet. Palestine and Gaza are on the agenda of the Socialist International and the Spanish Premier reiterated his stance for a two-state solution. Immigration is also on the agenda.
