39 years on: Remembering the murder of Raymond Caruana, the symbol of Malta’s fight for freedom

On 5 December 1986, thirty-nine years ago, Raymond Caruana was killed inside the Nationalist Party (PN) club in Gudja, a crime that remains one of the darkest episodes in Malta’s political history.

Caruana, today remembered as a martyr for freedom, was shot late at night when a submachine gun was fired from a car that stopped outside the PN club. The premises were scheduled to be officially inaugurated just days later. One of the bullets pierced the club’s doorway and struck Caruana, killing him instantly.

His murder became a defining moment of the violent political climate that gripped Malta during the 1980s, symbolising the dangers faced by citizens amid escalating tensions.

To commemorate the anniversary of his death, the PN will be celebrating a Mass today, Friday, in the evening at the Archipresbyteral Church in Gudja. A wreath-laying ceremony will follow at Caruana’s grave in the Gudja cemetery at 5:45 p.m. Afterwards, PN leader Alex Borg will address a political gathering at the Gudja Nationalist Party club.
