UPDTED: Medical personnel found the woman unresponsive but finally responded after several attempts to resuscitate her. She is currently in hospital in critical condition.
There was a suicide attempt at Corradino Correctional Facility earlier today. A 38 year old woman was found unresponsive in her cell.
Police investigations are currently ongoing and a Magisterial inquiry is expected to be opened.
Malta’s prisons have faced significant scrutiny over a high rate of suicides in recent years, with official data recordingย 16 suicides in total since the year 2000. Between 2018 and 2021, 14 inmates died while incarcerated, with three of those deaths in 2021 officially recorded as suicides.ย
Between 2022 and March 2025, only one suicide was officially recorded, a reduction that the government attributes to new measures introduced under the current prison administration. However, concerns remain about the number of suicide attempts and the overall mental well-being of inmates.
