Two arrested over major organised crime ring involving high-value stolen vehicles

Two men have been arrested following a complex police investigation into an organised crime group involved in the trafficking of high-value stolen vehicles.

According to police, the group was importing stolen cars into Malta using falsified documents from various EU countries. After being stored locally for several days, the vehicles were then shipped to North Africa and the Middle East.

The two suspects, both Libyan nationals, were arrested on Wednesday evening shortly after arriving in Malta from Pozzallo. They were driving a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota RAV4 – both vehicles suspected to be stolen, with forged paperwork and manipulated VIN numbers.

Investigations revealed that the same individuals, along with others forming part of the criminal network, had allegedly transported other stolen vehicles to Libya in previous months. In recent weeks, and with the assistance of Customs, Maltese authorities also confiscated additional vehicles that had been brought into the country and were awaiting export to North Africa.

Magistrate Monica Borg Galea has launched a magisterial inquiry. One of the arrested men was expected to be charged in court today, Friday, at around 11:30 a.m. before Magistrate Joseph Gatt.
