Malta gives free citizenship to Russian waterpolo player: the Labour Party celebrates the event

Malta has given free citizenship to Russian Waterpolo player Ivan Nagaev. Ivan Ngaev is currently affected by many bans on Russian national sports teams in major international events such as the Olympics, and Malta is now giving Russian athletes a way out of this ban.

Malta has also been handing out free citizenship to foreign athletes demoralising local athletes in the process and obfuscating local sports. Malta also risks losing its trust at international events and institutions as it is being accused of buying foreign athletes.

On the other hand, Malta is also ignoring the national security aspect in rewarding citizenships to Russian athletes who have been regularly used in international events to promote Russian military insignia.

The Labour Party outlet, The Journal, praised the event as “a major development”.
