Algeria, Turkey and Malta: the Courts that described journalists as terrorists in 2025

There were at least, three countries this year in which Courts described journalism as terrorism: these were Turkey, Algeria and Malta.

In 2025, Courts in Turkey condemned up to six Turkish journalists including Rahime Karvar to 25 months in prison on terrorism charges. Turkey frequently uses terrorism laws against journalists especially journalists covering Kurdish issues. The term “Kurdistan” is also banned in Turkey and is legally considered as incitement to terrorism.

In 2025, Courts in Algeria have also upheld the sentence of French journalist Christophe Gleizes who is imprisoned on accusations of “committing terrorism”. Christophe Gleizes is a journalist who worked for various French magazines and newspapers and traveled to Algeria without a journalistic visa. He travelled to Algeria to write a story about its most successful football club, Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie, but his small visa infraction lead to terrorism charges.

Back in Malta, Judge Toni Abela refused my Constitutional case that invoked the right to publish NuxellinaLeaks. Judge Toni Abela described my work as “psychological terrorism”. The sentence is being appealed.
