Mġarr United strengthened their hold on the women’s league title race as the 2025 calendar year came to a close, with a series of decisive results across the matchday significantly shaping the standings.
Mġarr United 2–0 Swieqi United
Josline N’Guessan 75’, Valeria Villegas 83’
Mġarr United ended their 2025 commitments in style, defeating Swieqi United 2–0 to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table. After a tight and competitive encounter, the Greens made the breakthrough in the closing stages as Josline N’Guessan broke the deadlock on 75 minutes before Valeria Villegas sealed the victory eight minutes later.
This result leaves Mġarr firmly in control of the title race and strong favourites to claim their maiden women’s league crown, despite ten matches still remaining. Crucially, they are yet to face second-placed Hibernians twice, with avoiding defeat in those encounters likely to keep them in command.
Swieqi United, meanwhile, slipped to third place and now trail the leaders by nine points, making their hopes of retaining the title increasingly remote.
San Ġwann 0–4 Hibernians
Vella OG 4’, Ayres 25’, Bartolo 41’, Sciberras 71’
Hibernians bounced back into second place with an emphatic 4–0 victory over San Ġwann. An early own goal set the tone before further strikes from Leah Ayres, Francesca Bartolo and Nicole Sciberras wrapped up a comfortable win.
For San Ġwann, the defeat leaves them on four points, while the match also marked an emotional farewell for American forward Hailey Russell, who played her final game for the club before completing a move to Greece.
Birkirkara 3–1 Valletta
Momo Ueda 2’, Kay Axiak 22’, Stephania Farrugia 63’ (B); Iman Mohamed 42’ (V)
Birkirkara rounded off their 2025 fixtures with a convincing 3–1 win over Valletta. The Stripes made a blistering start as Momo Ueda and Kay Axiak put them two goals ahead inside the opening 22 minutes, with Ueda netting her eighth goal of the season to underline her status as the club’s leading scorer.
Valletta reduced the deficit before the interval, but Birkirkara captain Stephania Farrugia restored the two-goal cushion midway through the second half to secure the points. The victory lifts Birkirkara to 15 points, while Valletta remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just one point.
As the league heads into the new year, Mġarr United have emerged as the team to beat, while the battle behind them remains fiercely contested.
