In Maltese politics, whatever purports to be may actually be the opposite. Just like the Labour Party projects itself as a party of progressives, women, vulnerable people and minorities, many of its officials are racist, homophobic, ignorant, illiterate, sexist, mysogonistic: x’ġisem għandha (insert popular politician name here) is used repeatedly in Labour circles. The editor of ONE News is literally run by a racist and a fascist.
You would think as someone who doesn’t live in Malta that just by reading the Labour Party’s propaganda, joining Labour is like entering a cosmopolitan paradise but it’s actually the exact opposite.
On October 2023, Phyllisienne Brincat was invited by Quinton Scerri on his talk-show Popolin that is shown on the on the public broadcaster (TVM) . The show is literally a populist talking-shop by a Labour Party activist and previous Zabbar mayor. During the show, Phyllisienne Brincat claimed that people born with disabilities were the result of human sin and a punishment by God. I could not find the show but I found her affirmation and I am posting it below. The Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability filed a complaint against her with the police, which was also signed by up to 150 people. She was subsequently arraigned in Court over hate speech, but she successfully avoided accountability by saying she was misinterpreted.
Phyllisienne Brincat also suffers from mental health problems herself, and she admitted to these problems during the same programme.
This is the era of dumb media in which the village idiots are paraded as respectable sources of information on mass media. The proliferation of all the wrong people in mass media today is very similar to how information and entertainment was mediated to the illiterate populace by the village idiots and the mentally infirm before the newspaper became the ultimate medium for news and information. Now, we are going back.
