The White House and Republican politicians have come out in defence of the ICE officer who shot and killed 37 year-old mother, Renee Good, in the city of Minneapolis. President Trump also said that the shooter was recovering in hospital.
Yesterday, another shooting in relation to migrant searches by the US authorities. Last night, Border Patrol officers (DHS) shot and wounded two people during a traffic stop in Portland, Oregon. This incident occurred amid heightened national tensions following a separate fatal shooting by an ICE agent in Minneapolis the day before. The shooting sparked protests near an ICE facility in Portland, with several arrests reported, and added to nationwide demonstrations condemning aggressive immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. Protests against ICE have also taken place in Minnesota, Washington DC, New York and Boston.
Several Democrat lawmakers are also calling for the ICE officer to be prosecuted including Ro Khanna and Alexandra Ocasio Cortez. Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota has called for ICE to halt its operations in the state and called for an investigation.
Tensions against ICE, which critics describe as “Trump’s personal fascist militia”, first rose in California but are quickly spreading again in the US in various cities.
