Irregular Asian migrant deported after failing to qualify for protection

Immigration Police have carried out the forced removal of an irregular migrant of Asian origin after he was found not to be eligible for international protection in the country.

The man had entered Malta in 2023 and, since then, repeatedly failed to cooperate with authorities in efforts to return him to his country of origin. During this period, he also served a prison sentence after attempting to escape from a detention centre.

In recent weeks, coordinated work between the Immigration Police and the Returns Unit within the Ministry for Home Affairs, Security and Employment led to the acquisition of the necessary identification documents, allowing the authorities to proceed with his deportation. The man was held in a detention centre until the process was finalised.

This marks the second forced return operation carried out by the Police so far in 2026.
