Police stepped up enforcement overnight in Ta’ Qali and Rabat as part of an ongoing clampdown on reckless driving, following a spate of reports about dangerous behaviour on the roads.
Officers on patrol in a public car park in Ta’ Qali came across two motorists, aged 25 and 26, performing drifting manoeuvres and other hazardous driving stunts. The pair were stopped on the spot and informed that they will be prosecuted for their actions, which were deemed to have endangered both themselves and bystanders.
In a separate incident later in the night, police in Rabat spotted a vehicle travelling at extreme speed. The driver failed to slow down and continued driving recklessly, clocking speeds of more than 160km/h while ignoring traffic rules and placing other road users in danger.
The chase ended in Siġġiewi, where the 21-year-old driver was stopped and identified. A subsequent inspection of the car revealed several irregularities, including an illegally fitted emergency siren. The vehicle was immediately seized, and the driver will also face charges.
Police stressed that these latest incidents form part of a wider enforcement effort, which follows earlier operations where several young drivers were caught racing and driving dangerously in areas such as Ta’ Qali, Ħ’Attard and Mosta. Those inspections had already led to multiple prosecutions, underlining the authorities’ zero-tolerance stance on illegal street racing and reckless driving.
Once again, the Police appealed to motorists to drive responsibly, warning that speeding and dangerous manoeuvres not only breach the law but can have fatal consequences. Enforcement patrols, they said, will continue in order to keep Malta’s roads safer for everyone.
