President and Prime Minister meet foreign Diplomatic Corps

President Myriam Spiteri Debono and Prime Minister Robert Abela met with the foreign diplomatic corps in Malta earlier today. Gathered at the Presidential Palace in Valletta, the President of the Republic gave a brief speech to the foreign ambassadors who were then greeted by the Prime Minister at the Auberge de Castile in the annual gathering.

In her speech, the President said that Malta has a thriving economy thanks to its skilled workforce despite being a very young nation. She said that Malta is keen to keep developing its foreign relations with dialogue, bilateral agreements and further outreach. She particularly referred to Malta’s Gulf Regional Policy released last December. She stated that Malta kept championing multilateralism and praised Malta’s participation in international organisations. She added that Malta is developing its new programme to enhance relations with countries in Asia and Oceania. On the Mediterranean region, she said that conflicts in the region persist and that the Two-State Solution for Israel and Palestine remains essential for lasting peace and stability.

The Mediterranean remains central to Malta’s foreign policy she added. On Ukraine, she said that efforts should be made for a peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. She also referred to the US intervention in Venezuela and appealed for the upholding of international law.ย  Apart from advocating for multilateralism, the President also warned that misinformation and disinformation are stoking and accelerating conflicts. She said that the tools of international law are needed to restrain international hegemony.
