Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado met US President Donald Trump at the White House earlier today. She presented him with her Nobel Peace Prize Medal and held discussions over the release of political prisoners and the transition to democracy. She also discussed with the US President the economic collapse in Venezuela and said that the people are united in their fight for democracy.
María Corina Machado also met with several US senators at the Capitol including Dick Durbin, Ruben Gallego, Alex Padilla, Rick Scott and Ted Cruz.
According to Foro Penal, the Venezuelan organisation advocating for political prisoners, up to 84 political prisoners have been released but up to 800 more remain incarcareted. President Trump praised Venezuela’s de facto President Delcy Rodríguez for cooperating with his administration. Some of the political prisoners released included French and Spanish citizens.
Meanwhile, in a meeting with Venezuela’s legitimate President Edmundo González, Spain’s Opposition Leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo stated that President González and María Corina Machado should be allowed to return to Venezuela.
