The Malta Premier League has announced the creation of a Solidarity Fund aimed at supporting clubs competing outside the top tier of Maltese football. Through this initiative, a portion of the Premier League’s own revenues will be redistributed to teams across the lower divisions.
Premier League clubs have agreed to allocate a total of €150,000 for the fund, with the money coming directly from club-generated income rather than UEFA funds. The distribution will see 45% of the total amount directed to clubs in the BOV Challenge League, 33% to National Amateur League I clubs, and the remaining 22% to National Amateur League II sides.
This move underlines the Malta Premier League’s commitment to cooperation and solidarity within the domestic football structure, despite there being no obligation to do so. The distribution model was finalised following internal discussions, feedback from last season’s similar initiative, and dialogue with the Malta Football Association, ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulations.
Earlier today, the Malta FA confirmed that it had been formally informed by the Malta Premier League of the launch of the Solidarity Fund, which will be administered by the MPL for the benefit of clubs from other divisions. The Malta FA welcomed the initiative and praised the Premier League and its member clubs for taking this important step.
The Association highlighted that solidarity programmes are a key pillar of a healthy and sustainable football ecosystem. The Malta FA also revealed that further investment in Maltese football is planned, with additional initiatives expected to be announced in the coming weeks as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain the positive momentum within the local game.
