Valletta and Ħamrun Spartans fought to a disciplined 0–0 draw yesterday, Saturday, January 24, 2026, in a match where defensive resilience ultimately overshadowed attacking intent.
While Ħamrun Spartans enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and arguably created the clearer openings, they were met with a stubborn and highly organized Valletta backline. The result, a goalless stalemate, mirrored the tactical deadlock that persisted throughout the 90 minutes at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
Team Selections and Tactical Setup
Ħamrun Spartans coach Giacomo Modica was forced to navigate the clash without regular goalkeeper Henry Bonello, who continues his recovery from injury. Brazilian forward Jonny was rewarded with his first start of the campaign following an impressive substitute appearance against Tarxien Rainbows last week.
On the other side, Valletta coach Thane Micallef opted for continuity, sticking with the same starting XI that featured in their previous outing. Notably, he kept Andrea Zammit—the hat-trick hero from their recent victory over Mosta—on the bench as a potential impact sub.
First Half Opportunities
The match began as a tense, high-stakes affair, though both sides struggled with ball distribution in the early stages. The first real opening came from a defensive lapse: Yuri Messias intercepted a misplaced pass from Matthew Guillaumier and attempted a clever chip over the advancing Ħamrun keeper, Celio, only for Emerson Marcelina to clear the danger.
Ħamrun gradually asserted their dominance. In the 25th minute, Ognjen Bjelicic found Jonny in space, but the Brazilian’s effort flashed wide. Moments later, Jonny was again at the heart of the action, narrowly missing a low cross from Matias Garcia that could have easily been tapped into an empty net. Just before the interval, Demar Ceter saw his header from a Ryan Camenzuli cross sail just over the crossbar.
Second Half Deadlock
The script remained largely unchanged after the break. Ħamrun dictated the tempo, while the Citizens focused on soaking up the pressure and looking for swift transition opportunities. Ħamrun’s clearest second-half chances arrived in the final ten minutes. Ceter set up Koffi in the 82nd minute, but his angled drive missed the mark. Shortly after, Joseph Mbong fired wide after being played in by Compri.
Valletta nearly snatched a dramatic winner three minutes from time when a deflected shot fell to Messias, whose acrobatic overhead kick forced a world-class save from Celio. Ħamrun had one final response through substitute Danilo Bulevardi, but his low drive whistled past the upright, ensuring both teams left with a single point.
The result keeps Valletta in a strong position in the Closing Round standings, while Ħamrun remains firmly in the hunt as the season progresses.
