Yesterday, the EU has signed a law officially banning the purchases of Russian gas imports in the EU. The law was signed co-jointly by the European Parliament and the European Council. The ban on Russian has imports will take effect by the end of 2026, and pipeline gas imports will be prohibited by September 30, 2027.
The EU is in the process of fully divesting from Russian gas and oil and is diversifying its sources in order to reduce dependencies. Qatar. the US and Azerbaijan are all selling more gas to Europe as a result.
The EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jรธrgensen (EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing) said that the decision was a “very clear signal to Russia,” and “No more will we let Russia blackmail member states of the European Union and no more will we help indirectly fund the war in Ukraine.”
EU member-states still purchasing Russian gas include Spain, France, Belgium, Slovakia and Hungary. Slovakia and Hungary were the only member-states which opposed and voted against the law.
