The Nationalist Party is currently challenging the government over a recently published statistic by Eurostat showing a 16.6% rise in greenhouse gas emissions in Malta. Nationalist Party MP Even Borg Bonello highlighted that Malta was the only country in the EU to have its greenhouse gas emissions increased since 2013. The EU decreased its overall greenhouse gas emissions by up to 34% since 2013.
However, when one digs deeper into the Eurostat’s data-sets, figures show that greenhouse gas emissions in Malta have declined falling from 4.1 tonnes per capita in 2023 to 3.8 tonnes per capita in 2024. Malta also has a low per capita emission rate compared to her larger economies in Europe.
The use of renewable energy sources in Malta is at 10.7% which is the lowest in the EU. Energy prices remain high despite the rising use of renewable energy sources in Europe.
