In a surprise dig at the Second Amendment, US President Donald Trump said that demonstrator Alex Pretti, who was murdered by federal ICE agents in Minneapolis, should not have been carrying a gun when he was killed. The comments came as a surprise within a Republican constituency that has historically defended the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment, even as outrage mounts over Prettiโs death.
The incident marked the second murder by ICE in Minneapolis in January, following the earlier death of Renรฉe Good, on 7 January.
Trump later told reporters that he did not believe Pretti was acting as an โassassinโ and said that the case was โa very unfortunate incident.โ
Yet Trump also reiterated that he did not think protestors should bring firearms to demonstrations, a position that has drawn criticism from gun rights advocates and some Republican figures, who argue that lawful gun ownership, including at protests, is protected under both federal and Minnesota law.
