NGO Repubblika has held a vigil in front of the US Embassy in Ta’ Qali despite condemnations by the Prime Minister in Parliament on Monday.
NGO president Vicky Ann Cremona said that developments unfolding in the United States were deeply worrying because of their global repercussions, particularly given the country’s influence on international politics and democratic norms. She said that, as Maltese citizens, they hold a long-standing respect for the United States and for what it has historically represented.
Cremona added that this concern stems precisely from that respect, arguing that recent political developments give the impression that the US is regressing towards a more authoritarian form of governance, rather than strengthening democratic institutions. She stressed that the vigil was not intended as an act of hostility towards the American people, but as a symbolic call to defend democratic values and the rule of law.
Participants at the vigil held candles and placards calling for the protection of democratic freedoms, while organisers said the protest was peaceful and aimed at expressing solidarity with civil society voices in the United States who are raising similar concerns.
