In a very bizarre speech given yesterday in Parliament, Prime Minister Robert Abela condemned the vigil that is going to take place later today in front of the US Embassy against the killings and repression of ICE officers in the US and in solidarity with US citizens. The Prime Minister stated that the vigil and the Opposition’s position are populist and risk compromising Malta’s good relationship with the US.
The vigil is being organised by NGO Repubblika and has no connection to the Nationalist Party. The vigil is also being supported by political party Momentum, which is not in Parliament.
The Prime Ministerโs position is similar to the one he stated on Greenland, when he said that he did not want to take a position on the matter in order to avoid alienating the US government, with whom the Maltese government has a good relationship.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Alex Borg, has condemned the Prime Minister for refusing to support Greenland and Denmark in public over US threats and then taking a pro-European position behind closed-doors.
ICE is being described as President Donald Trump’s private militia and it has shot and killed at least two US citizens since the start of the year.
