Prime Minister Robert Abela peddles Kremlin threats to Europe and says Malta’s relationship with the US is at its best ever

Questioned about “the international situation” by his ONE News host, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that he was reluctant to comment so as not to jeapordise Malta’s interests. He said that Malta’s relationship with the US is at its best ever also thanks to the work of the Foreign Minister Ian Borg. The Prime Minister refused to make any supportive statements to Denmark in favour of Greenland’s territorial integrity.

Democrat lawmakers are currently pushing back against President Trump’s proposal to annex Greenland.

On the proposal to appropriate frozen Russian assets for Ukraine, Prime Minister Robert Aela peddled the Kremlin’s threats and said that if this was to happen it would have opened Europe to a war against Russia. Russia is already escalating its hybrid war against Europe irrespective of its frozen assets. The threats against Europe are frequently made by Russia on any action Europe takes with regard to Ukraine and are often backed with nuclear blackmail.

Malta joined Belgium and Italy to oppose the use of Russian frozen assets for Ukraine. The Prime Minister has been using this issue as a populist talking point at home citing Malta’s national interests, liabilities and the potential war of Russia against Europe. Malta is also refusing to make statements on Greenland, preferring instead to preserve its good relationship with the US, but it is not clear what dividends Malta will get from the US by ignoring its European allies and partners. The Prime Minister’s position puts Malta at even more risk of isolation.
