Alex Borg takes a regressive turn on abortion: “there should be a case-by case study on whether women should be sent to jail over abortion”

Interviewed earlier today by Kurt Sansone, Opposition Leader Alex Borg took a very regressive turn on abortion compared to Labour’s position.  Opposition Leader Alex Borg reiterated that the Nationalist Party is against abortion and that abortion should not be decriminalised.

Last week, the Prime Minister said that he will use his constitutional right to recommend a Presidential Pardon to any woman who is sent to prison over abortion. This was already the Prime Minister’s position after he  refused to change the law to decriminalise abortion after a woman was charged in Court over a medical abortion. The Nationalist Party didn’t even bother to issue a statement on the case.

Political leaders, including Alex Borg, all agree on the right of a woman to choose over her pregnancy and none of them would forbid their daughters to take a medical abortion, but publicly they are both pussyfooting on the issue because neither of them have the actual leadership capabilities to convince their audience and their crowd over their ideals.

Remarkably, Alex Borg, who supposedly should be bringing change and renewed enthusiasm in politics, is taking a conservative position on abortion compared to Labour and naturally, this position is being communicated in a very patronising and patriarchal tone.

The Opposition Leader literally said that there should be a case-by-case study on whether women should go to jail over their abortions. Despite the Prime Minister’s cowardice in changing the law, at least he did take a more pro-active and progressive approach by underlining clearly that no woman should go to prison over abortion.
