Malta and Holy See reaffirm commitment to peace and multilateral reform in meeting with President Spiteri Debono and Foreign Minister Ian Borg

President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono received the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, for a courtesy visit at San Anton Palace, reaffirming the strong and longstanding relations between Malta and the Vatican.

During the meeting, Cardinal Parolin conveyed the greetings and best wishes of Pope Leone XIV to the President of Malta. He expressed satisfaction with the excellent cooperation between Malta and the Holy See across various levels, while also commending Maltaโ€™s active role in the multilateral arena and its consistent commitment to peace, justice and the rule of law.

Discussions focused on the current international situation, including ongoing conflicts and broader global challenges. Both sides highlighted the importance of fraternity and dialogue as guiding principles in international relations, alongside the need to reform multilateral systems, including the United Nations, to better address contemporary global realities.

President Spiteri Debono reaffirmed Maltaโ€™s commitment to addressing the root causes of conflict and to continuing its efforts in promoting peace and responsible engagement within the international community.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, also participated in the discussions. He discussed Maltaโ€™s long-standing support for the multilateral system, while acknowledging the need for reform and a pragmatic approach in response to evolving global dynamics. He reiterated that Maltaโ€™s foreign policy remains focused on strengthening dialogue, preventing conflict and promoting peace.

Both sides agreed that, despite the challenges facing the international community, there is a shared responsibility to remain committed to the common good, peace and collective global responsibility.

The Maltese Ambassador to the Holy See, Frank Zammit, was also present for the meeting.
