Historic Saint Julian’s spy house to be replaced by a hotel

A historic house in St Julian’s, which served as a base for British intelligence operations during the Second World War, is under risk of demolition and earmarked to be replaced by a hotel. The site was originally built in 1916 and was used as a covert base for counter-intelligence operations led by Colonel Bertram Ede, a British officer, making the villa a local site linked to Allied espionage and resistance efforts in Malta.

It is unclear whether the old site is going to be demolished as part of the plan for a new hotel. The current owners have applied for a permit to excavate the garden and develop it as part of a hotel.

The application has been submitted by Mamdouh Altllas on behalf of his company AMIR Ltd. You can find the application here.

There is an article about it by Times of Malta and also a video by Conrad Neil Gatt, posted below.

We will be providing more history about the site in the weeks to come.
