Conrad Neil Gatt is attracting a lot of attention and interest in his archeological vigilante work. Cornad Neil Gatt is visiting abandoned historical locations like WW2-era shelters and raising awareness about their preservation and upkeep. He was also recently interviewed by Jon Mallia.
He is essentially filling a void left by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage which has historically avoided using the full extent of its powers to protect cultural and national heritage, as part of its appeasement to the government’s policy in favour of unrestricted construction and development. This policy of appeasement to building contractors has cost a lot of historical sites and has been in place throughout different political administrations.
In fact, Conrad Neil Gatt is also pressuring the relevant institutions to take action and preserve the national and cultural heritage. Here below he is seen raising awareness about World War 2 shelters in Paola and Luqa. He is regularly raising awareness about the upkeep and preservation of heritage buildings and also taking up issue with the Minister for Culture, Owen Bonnici, who is responsible for the aforementioned and relevant entities.
Citizens like Gatt give me a lot of hope in our society because it shows that there are people who still care.
