No one takes responsibility for the assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi

According to the Libyan news outlet that first reported Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s death, he was assassinated by four men who stormed his compound in the city of Zintan. The 444 Brigade, allied to the Tripoli government denied any involvement.

His political team is calling on the Libyan judiciary for justice. Saif Gaddafi was sought by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Born in 1972 and educated at the London School of Economics, with whom he had a lengthy association, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was mostly viewed as the moderating voice of his father’s crazy and terroristic regime before Saif himself appeared in a televised broadcast on February 20th 2011 threatening Libyan protestors with “rivers of blood”. In November of the same year, he was captured by the Zintan militia as he tried to flee to Niger. Once captured, the militia members cut off his index finger as punishment for having waved it at the audience when he made his โ€œrivers of bloodโ€ threat.

Saif Gaddafi was living in hiding, however he had publicly made his intention of returning back to politics and even poised himself as a potential presidential candidate. He was also being backed by the Russian government which has also been conducting propaganda efforts to rehabilitate the image of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya and elsewhere in Africa.
