Spartans held by stubborn Gżira as goalless draw keeps Maroons top

Ħamrun Spartans were left frustrated after failing to find a way past a disciplined Gżira United side, with the clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium ending in a goalless draw.

The point was enough for Gżira United to move one point clear at the summit of the standings on 10 points, while the reigning champions remained in third place on eight.

Ħamrun will look back at this encounter with regret, especially after creating a number of clear openings in the opening hour. However, Gżira fully deserved their point after producing a solid and organised display that once again highlighted their credentials as serious contenders in the Closing Round.

The Maroons made an impressive start and almost broke the deadlock after just two minutes. A quick counter saw Chrisonic N’Sa surge forward before squaring for Maxuell Maia, whose delicate chip beat Henry Bonello but was dramatically cleared off the line by Emerson Marcelina.

That early scare sparked Ħamrun into action. On nine minutes, Damir Ceter flicked the ball into the path of Joseph Mbong, but Colombo rushed out to block. The loose ball fell to Danilo Bulevardi, whose effort was again denied by the Gżira goalkeeper.

Bulevardi went close once more on 25 minutes with an audacious overhead kick that drifted narrowly wide. Gżira replied eight minutes later through N’Sa, but his shot failed to trouble the target.

The Spartans squandered a golden opportunity on 36 minutes when Mbong failed to connect from close range after a perfectly weighted pass by Matthew Guillaumier.

Ħamrun made changes after the break, introducing Jonny for Shaisen Attard, and the Brazilian was soon through on goal, only to be denied by a brave intervention from Bonello.

Gżira remained dangerous from set-pieces and on 64 minutes Compri’s delivery picked out Vincenzo Polito, whose header was comfortably saved by Colombo.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, Ħamrun lacked the cutting edge needed to break down Gżira’s stubborn defence. The Maroons stood firm to secure a clean sheet and a valuable point that keeps them in pole position at the top of the table.
