Europeans are calling for a more united, ambitious and protective European Union, according to the Autumn 2025 Eurobarometer survey. The findings show that defence, security and the economy are citizens’ top priorities as the EU faces ongoing global instability, conflicts near its borders and growing digital risks.
The survey found that 89% of respondents believe EU Member States should be more united to face global challenges, while 86% want the EU to have a stronger international voice. Two-thirds of Europeans want the EU to play a greater role in protecting them from global crises, with defence and security identified as the most important area.
Security concerns remain high, particularly regarding wars near the EU, terrorism and cyber-attacks. Citizens also expressed strong concern about disinformation, artificial intelligence-generated content and online data protection, reflecting growing anxiety over the impact of digital technologies on democracy and social cohesion.
In Malta, support for EU membership remains strong and broadly in line with the European average, with a clear majority of respondents expressing confidence in the country’s place within the Union. Maltese respondents also ranked security, economic stability and the cost of living among their main concerns, mirroring wider European trends. The survey indicates that many Maltese citizens see closer EU cooperation as essential in safeguarding national interests in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.
Overall, EU membership continues to be viewed positively by 62% of respondents across the bloc. Support is especially strong among young people, who show high expectations for the EU’s future role in areas such as climate policy, digital regulation and collective security, the survey reported.
