Labour government issues new yacht marina plan and hotels for Marsa: no details published

The Labour government is currently promoting its “Vision 2050” which is another glossy way of telling us about its plans to turn Malta into a one-Party dictatorial state. As part of this vision, the Labour government plans a yacht marina and hotels for Marsa, but it has not yet published any details about it.

It is promoting this new plan via a consultation page for the regeneration of the Grand Harbour.

The original policy document for the vision can be found here. It contains many ambitious economic targets, however the government uses many buzzwords in this PR exercise and states, for example, that it wants to make tourism more sustainable: the government is trying to push a policy of transition to higher quality tourists to transition from quantity to quality.

The government’s “Grand Harbour Revival Plan” should supposedly fit this economic vision. However everything that is being presented so far looks more of the same, just glossed out in PR campaigns. It’s mostly the local boating industry that wants yacht marinas, so Labour is admitting that it is giving up on rehabilitating hard industry. Marsa will be turned into another high-end tourist spot like Birgu and Marsa residents will benefit greatly as their property price will go up.

However, this is more of the same and this means that it will only continue to add to the pressure of housing prices. Marsa and Hamrun have become somewhat a refuge for first-time buyers and this window will soon end with the Grand Harbour plans.
