Speaking to Euronews the EU’s High Representative Kaja Kallas said that the EU plans to appoint a mediator to mediate with Russia over Ukraine, joining the ongoing talks between Ukraine and Russia as mediated by the US. Russia is opposing Ukraine’s and Europe’s counter-peace proposal and talks are ongoing between the US-Kremlin side and the Ukrainians in Abu Dhabi.
Unconfirmed reports state that Former Finnish President Sauli Niinistรถ is set to be chosen for the role: he speaks Russian and previously had a working relationship with Vladimir Putin.
The EU’s top diplomat said that Europe will be pushing for Russia to make concessions during these talks including giving up territory in Ukraine and reducing the size of its army.
Russia is currently deliberately bombing Ukrainian civilians and their power and energy infrastructure in order to put pressure on Ukraine to capitulate.
She was also asked about the recent incident at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics when JD Vance was booed by the crowds. Vice-Commissioner Kallas said thatย “Weโve heard a lot of not-so-nice words regarding Europe. Our public also has pride, European pride. It shows.”
JD Vance has consistently disparaged Europe including in his first speech in Europe at the Munich Security Conference in February 2025. JD Vance is also openly supporting European far-right political parties.
