10 dead, including suspected shooter, in mass shooting at Canadian high school

A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, left 10 people dead, including the suspected shooter, Canadian authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) first received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School — a public high school serving students aged roughly 12 to 18 — at about 1.20 p.m. Pacific Time. An emergency alert was issued urging residents in the region to stay indoors and shelter in place. That alert was lifted in the early evening after police said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Officers entering the school found multiple victims. Six people were found dead inside the building, and another died on the way to hospital, RCMP said. Police later located two more bodies at a residence believed to be linked to the shooter. A person believed to be responsible for the violence was also found dead at the school from an apparent self-inflicted injury.

At least two people were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, and about 25 others were assessed at local medical facilities for non-life-threatening wounds, according to police.

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said authorities believe they have identified the suspected shooter, but they have not released details pending notification of next of kin and further investigation. The motive behind the attack remains under review.

Tumbler Ridge, in northeastern British Columbia, is a rural community with a population of roughly 2,400 people. The scale of the shooting has drawn national attention, with Canadian leaders expressing condolences and support for the affected families and community.

Police and emergency services continue to investigate the incident.
