Mġarr United close in on historic title as Hibernians falter

Mġarr United have taken a massive step toward their first-ever Assikura Women’s League title, extending their lead at the top to nine points following a dominant Matchday 12.

The league leaders made short work of bottom-side Valletta, securing a 5–0 victory at the Centenary Stadium. The match was effectively over by half-time as the Greens clinical finishing produced four goals in an eight-minute blitz. Brenda Borg and Valeria Villegas both netted braces, while Yulya Carella added to the tally. While Mġarr charge toward the trophy, Valletta remain at the foot of the table with a single point.

Swieqi United took full advantage of results elsewhere to reclaim second place with a 4–0 win over San Ġwann. Jade Flask was the star of the show with a goal in each half, supported by strikes from Salamatu Abdulai and Sara Saliba. The Owls now sit one point ahead of Hibernians in the race for the runner-up spot.

The weekend’s most anticipated fixture saw Hibernians drop to third after a resilient Birkirkara held them to a 2–2 draw. The Stripes looked set for an upset after Stella Francalanza and Momo Ueda put them two goals up. However, the Paolites fought back through Natalee Geren, whose pressure eventually forced an own goal from Julia Zarb to rescue a point for Hibernians.

The action returns this Thursday with a high-stakes encounter between Birkirkara and Swieqi United. Swieqi must win to keep their slim title hopes alive, while Birkirkara aim to prove their draw against Hibernians was no fluke.
