EU Commissioner President says US State Secretary’s speech is reassuring: High Representative seems less impressed

Earlier at the Munich Security Conference, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that she was reassured with the US Secretary of State’s speech Marco Rubio after he extolled the Trans-Atlantic alliance and declared that the US wanted to secure its prosperous future alongside with its long-standing ally, Europe. She also described the State Secretary as a strong ally and a friend.

President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Europe is challenged by powers that are over-reaching out more than they used to and named Russia as Europe’s major threat.

The EU Commissioner President was speaking during a discussion with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The British Prime Minister warned against complacency and also applauded Europe’s drive to achieve autonomy in security and defence. You can listen to the full discussion here.

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas looked bemused during Secretary Rubio’s speech: they are known to have a challenging working relationship (speaking diplomatically, of course).

He consistently set a different tone on Russia’s aggression compared to President Trump by primarily being more critical and hawkish on Russia and Vladimir Putin. He has been successful in cutting the UAE’s military supply routes to the Rapid Support Forces challenging the Emirati regime that has the propensity to bribe both the US and government and most of Europe simultaneously. In some occasions when President Trump issues outlandish orders, the State Secretary seems to be minimising, such as in this case when he avoided issuing the new directives through the DOS website.ย  The State Secretary has been praised by Kyrylo Budanov and has now also earned the public praise of the EU’s Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen.
