Earlier at the Munich Security Conference, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that she was reassured with the US Secretary of State’s speech Marco Rubio after he extolled the Trans-Atlantic alliance and declared that the US wanted to secure its prosperous future alongside with its long-standing ally, Europe. She also described the State Secretary as a strong ally and a friend.
President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Europe is challenged by powers that are over-reaching out more than they used to and named Russia as Europe’s major threat.
The EU Commissioner President was speaking during a discussion with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The British Prime Minister warned against complacency and also applauded Europe’s drive to achieve autonomy in security and defence. You can listen to the full discussion here.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas looked bemused during Secretary Rubio’s speech: they are known to have a challenging working relationship (speaking diplomatically, of course).
