In a discussion with India’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul echoed the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over the speech given by the US Secretary of state Marco Rubio. The German Foreign Minister said that Rubio’s speech was speech was expected because he is a friend and his position is already known.
Minister Johann Wadephul said that Germany has been a major contributor to the implementation of the EU’s trade deal with India, adding that Germany’s preference stems from the fact that India is a democracy with free speech and the rule of law, and that there is mutual trust between the two sides.
On the other hand Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that the world is moving towards more multipolarity, echoing China’s worldview. However, the Indian Minister avoided answering questions on India’s purchases of Russian oil. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump said that India was ending its Russian oil imports.
During the discussion the German Foreign Minister said that Europe should move faster in applying qualified majority over foreign policy to consolidate its unified voice.
