In his first visit to Brussels, the new Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has called for the introduction of a qualified-majority decision-making process for foreign policy in the European Council after Hungary vetoed Ukraine’s €90 billion loan. He also called on Hungary’s President Viktor Orban to respect the deal made by European leaders and stop blocking the loan.
Viktor Orban is facing a potential loss at the general elections next month.
The Dutch Prime Minister also said that support for Ukraine needs to continue but also said that fixing an ascension date for EU membership is too premature. He also made comments in favour of European unity, defence investments and the preservation of NATO.
Calls by European powers to introduce qualified-majority voting in the European Council are increasing following Hungary’s veto. Malta is against the introduction of qualified-majority voting at the European Council.
